POLICE are searching for a man who threatened staff at the Swansea branch of Newcastle Permanent Building Society and left with a small sum of money.

Closed-circuit television images show the man entering the empty branch about 1pm yesterday and approaching the counter.

The suspect, who wore white gloves, a straw hat and a thick jacket, handed a note to staff which demanded money and indicated he had a firearm, but did not produce it during the robbery.

He removed the hat after leaving the counter.

Police are looking for a solidly built, Caucasian man, 185 centimetres tall with brown hair and a tattoo on the left side of his neck.

The tattoo runs horizontally across his neck and is comprised of four to five symbols.

The man was last seen proceeding south along the Pacific Highway.

Police urge anyone with information to contact Lake Macquarie detectives on 4942 9915 or Crimestoppers.
